Fellowship in Female Urology, Reconstructive Surgery and Urodynamics
The section of Female Urology, Reconstructive Surgery and Urodynamics offers two positions for a two year clinical fellowship for qualified candidates who have completed an accredited urology residency. The fellowship focuses on clinical and operative experience in pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, voiding dysfunction, urodynamics and reconstructive surgery under the supervision of Dr. Shlomo Raz and Dr. Larissa V. Fellowship in Robotic and Laparoscopic SurgeryThe UCLA Urology fellowship in Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery offers comprehensive clinical training in all aspects of robotic and laparoscopic surgery, as well as offering the opportunity to instruct resident housestaff and coordinate ongoing research efforts. The anticipated surgical volume will be 6-8 major laparoscopic/robotic cases a week, including laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, LESS approaches, transperitoneal and extraperitoneal robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, as well as challenging open surgeries under the direction of Jim C. Hu, MD, MPH, Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery. The fellowship also incorporates training and research at the UCLA Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT), http://casit.ucla.edu, which houses a laboratory for robotic surgery. UCLA currently has a dual console da Vinci Si system at Santa Monica-UCLA and Westwood/Ronald Reagan hospitals, as well as at the West LA VA hospital. Additionally, Ronald Reagan/Westwood has a da Vinci S system. UCLA Urology offers a one-year fellowship to qualified candidates who have completed an accredited residency in urology, and who demonstrate a commitment to academics, research, and teaching. Fellowship in Renal TransplantationAn American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) approved fellowship position is available yearly. This post-graduate training program includes two years of experience with clinical renal transplantation, and both clinical and transitional basic science research. The trainee will be closely involved with the pre-operative surgical evaluation, living donor and cadaveric renal transplantation, open and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, management of immunosuppression, management of surgical complications and urologic surgery in patients with end-stage renal disease. A minimum of six months must be devoted to research. The program currently performs approximately 300 renal transplants, about 40 of these in children, and 30 combined kidney/pancreas transplants. Acceptable candidates must meet all of the requirements for obtaining a medical license in California. Graduates of ACGME approved residency programs are preferred, but highly qualified foreign medical graduates with approved visas, ECFMG certification, fluent English language skills, and equivalent surgical residency training will be considered. Surgeons with an interest in multi-organ abdominal transplantation training should address their applications to Dr. Ronald Busuttil, in the Department of Surgery.

Urologic Oncology FellowshipUCLA’s Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program is accredited by the Society of Urologic Oncology, receiving its initial five-year accreditation in 2001. The program is directed by Dr. Arie Belldegrun, Professor of Urology and Chief of the Division of Urologic Oncology. Our Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program provides a post-residency training program in all aspects of urologic oncology, including clinical (medical and surgical), clinical-research trials and basic urologic research. Multi-disciplinary Clinical Management Each fellow will participate in the ongoing weekly activities of the UCLA Kidney Cancer and Prostate Cancer Programs, specifically being involved in patient evaluation, presentation, discussion with medical oncologists, interaction with protocol nurses and final decisions on treatment and placement on clinical trials. Surgical Oncology Two full days each week will be devoted to hands-on surgical expertise in the operating room, where the fellow will become familiar with a wide variety of procedures. Clinical Conferences Participation will be required in the following weekly conferences: Urologic Oncology Tumor Board, Kidney Cancer Conference, Urology Grand Rounds, Clinical Trials Working Group. Plus the fellow is also expected to participate in the educational training programs for the residents, including journal club and teaching rounds. Research Each fellow will be assigned a basic science project in urologic oncology under the supervision of the corresponding lab director. The fellow will also participate in weekly lab meetings and cancer center research conferences. In conjunction with the research area, each fellow will be given gradual responsibility in grant writing related to his/her lab projects. Clinical Research The fellow will have an opportunity to participate in an active program of urologic oncology clinical trials. He/she will assist in planning, designing, writing and conducting the trial, along with the day-to-day follow-up of patients. This will also give the fellow the chance to interact with clinical nurses and study coordinators and assist in the final analysis and manuscript preparation. Candidates are required to have completed or anticipate completion of a urology residency in an ACGME-accredited program prior to being considered for a position. They must also qualify for California medical licensure. The fellow will be appointed for a two-year period from July 1-June 30, contingent upon satisfactory performance during the initial year. A third year of training may be undertaken at the Department's discretion. Two positions will be offered each year.
