Minimally Invasive Surgery - Urology at UCLA
Our Expert Team
Faculty members of the Department of Urology are pioneers in developing new innovations and technologies that have lead to safer and more effective treatments for patients.
Among these advances have been new approaches and techniques in minimally invasive surgery, using miniature instruments inserted via a small tube (called a laparoscope) through tiny incisions in the body.
Laparoscopic surgery has revolutionized the way patients are treated for a variety of conditions because these minimally invasive procedures result in less discomfort, quicker recovery times and better outcomes for patients than traditional “open” surgery.
Diverse Expertise
Under the direction of Peter Schulam, M.D., Ph.D., the Division of Endourology and Minimally Invasive Surgery is collaborating with other specialists within the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA to develop and perfect minimally invasive techniques for treating many urologic conditions. The UCLA Biomechanical Engineering Department has been integral in developing novel biological sensors, instruments, and surgical techniques that can be used in minimally invasive surgery.
Stone Treatment Center
Our Stone Treatment Center offers the latest treatments for kidney stones with success rates well above the national average.
Under the direction of Dr. Schulam, the Center offers state-of-the-art treatments including percutaneous nephrolithotomy or lithotripsy (laparascopic techniques to break up or remove a stone), and ureteroscopy (insertion of a thin scope into the urinary tract). The Center uses the latest advances in lithotripter intrarenal, intraureteral, and laparoscopic surgery.
UCLA has a reputation for successful management of difficult stones, achieving an 89 percent stone-free rate after surgery, compared to the national average of 73 percent.
