Promoting Health & Well Being

Healthy at Every Age: Staying healthy, no matter your age, is essential to your well being. Learn more about UCLA Urology’s Healthy at Every Age »

Cruisin’ for a Cure (CFAC): This one-day charity car show has been held annually since 2001 in Southern California, with a primary goal to provide men with free Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests. All men over 40 are encouraged to participate in a FREE prostate cancer screening, a blood test that measures the level of Prostate Specific Antigen or PSA. For several years, UCLA Urologists have donated their time to this event by providing PSA screenings at a mobile testing lab, helping to bring awareness of prostate cancer to the general public and, in some cases, helping to save lives by encouraging patients to seek further medical help. The funds raised at this event are in support of prostate cancer research. View Related Story »

“Insights into Cancer” Lecture Series: Once a month, the Simms/Mann–UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology presents “Insights into Cancer,” a free public lecture series for cancer patients, their families and the community. Each lecture features a leading professional who provides up-to-date information, practical advice and answers to cancer-related questions, and our UCLA Urologists regularly participate as guest lecturers.

Prostate Cancer Support Groups:

  • UCLA Medical Center’s Prostate Cancer Support Group offers one-on-one consultation, and provides patients with the appropriate resources. This program works in collaboration with the UCLA Department of Urology’s Clark Urology Center and the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. For more information contact Malou-Blanco-Yarosh, MSN, RN, CNS at (310)825-8407.
  • Simms/Mann UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology Prostate Cancer Support Group provides the opportunity for patients to meet others in similar situations and to share stories, provides practical suggestions, and general support. Additionally, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker provides information on relaxation, techniques for navigating the healthcare system, finding needed resources, and coping with day to day challenges. This group is open to the community. However, due to space limitation, priority is given to patients who receive their treatment at UCLA. For more information or to enroll, please call Shane Kennington, LCSW, at (310) 794-6363. This program works in collaboration with the UCLA Oncology Center and the UCLA Department of Urology’s Clark Urology Center.

Impact of Urologic Diseases on the Public

Urologic Diseases in America (UDA): For more than a decade, UCLA Urology’s Health Services Research Group has been federally funded by the NIDDK for Urologic Diseases in America (UDA), a first-of-its-kind effort to document quality, cost, access, and technology trends in urology.

The project, which has produced dozens of publications in leading journals along with three comprehensive compendiums on urologic care, serves as a vital resource for policy-makers as well as researchers throughout the country. With easy-to-access information, the accompanying website, with comprehensive epidemiological information on urologic diseases, is available for free to anyone who wants to use it.
